EMERGENCY PLAN
for
 
SUICIDE
  
Suicide Threat
 
 
Consider any reference to suicide as serious.
 
Do not leave the suicidal person alone.
 
Notify the appropriate counselor or college official designated to serve as suicide
prevention staff, and the building administrator immediately.
 
Stay with the person until suicide intervention staff arrives.
 
Do not allow the person to leave college without appropriate adult supervision.
 
Suicide Attempt in College
 
 
Notify building administrator, paramedic, nurse or other appropriate professional
staff.
 
Notify Campus Police at 504-671-6111.
 
 
 
Call 911
if the person needs medical attention, has a weapon, needs to be
restrained or next of kin/emergency contact cannot be reached.
 
Try to calm the suicidal person.
 
Stay with the suicidal person until suicide intervention staff arrives.
 
Isolate the suicidal person or the area, if possible.
 
Initiate first aid.
 
Do not allow the person to leave college without appropriate adult supervision.
 
Building Administrator
 
 
Call parent, guardian, or next of kin/emergency contact if the suicidal person is a
student. Call next of kin/emergency contact if suicidal person is an employee.
 
Notify Chancellor’s office or appropriate college level administrator.
 
Work with College Office of Public Affairs and Information.
